In the early 19th century Surry Hills was well on the outskirts of the city – the ideal place
to build an elegant mansion. By the 1850s, many of today’s attractive terrace houses were
constructed. The area then sank into decline, becoming an overcrowded slum, with brothels,
sly grog shops and notorious gangs.
Such conditions were described by Ruth Park in her 1940s novels, 'Poor Man’s Orange' and 'The Harp in
the South'. In the early 1900s, the suburb contained a large Chinese community due to its proximity to
the markets, but many were driven out by the slum clearances, resumptions and road widening undertaken
by the Council between 1906 and 1929.
Post-war migration brought many Europeans, particularly from Greece and Italy, attracted to the low
cost housing. Today’s Surry Hills is a colourful and diverse suburb, a far cry from its shady past, and
well known for art galleries, antique dealers, cafes, pubs and fashion outlets.
Shopping
The main Surry Hills shopping strip is Crown Street, popular for its offbeat clothing, homewares,
bookshops and food stores. There are markets selling clothing, gifts, books and bric-a-brac at
Shannon Reserve on the first Saturday of every month, and some of the city’s best antiques can be
found at the Sydney Antique Centre on South Dowling Street. The local shopping centre is Surry Hills
Shopping Village on Cleveland Street.
Dining
Once again, Crown Street – where it crosses Oxford, Cleveland and Fitzroy Streets – is the place to go.
There is an extraordinary range of eateries here – from tiny Lebanese takeaways to upmarket modern
Australian restaurants and some very good pub dining rooms. Oxford, Riley, Bourke and Albion Streets
also offer many places to eat, including Italian and Asian establishments.
Leisure & Entertainment
One of the area’s best attractions is the Brett Whiteley Studio on Raper Street. Open on weekends only,
this old factory was the artist’s home and studio prior to his death in June 1992. There are plenty of
outdoor activities, including golf and tennis, at nearby Moore Park, and some happening pubs, particularly
on Crown, Fitzroy and Foveaux Streets. The nearest theatre is Belvoir Street and there are more clubs
and pubs on Oxford Street and around Taylor Square.

Hills Reserve at the corner of Albion and Riley Streets was once a gully known as ‘Frog Hollow’. Filled to the
brim with narrow terraces that were overcrowded and had poor light and ventilation, it was a notorious
‘no-go area’ frequented by some of the area’s worst criminals in the 1920s. The City is currently redeveloping
the site for more extensive use.
Foveaux Street was named after Captain Joseph Foveaux, NSW Corps paymaster, who received a land
grant of 100 acres in the Surry Hills area in 1792.
